About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for a Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Advisor, based in Cambridgeshire, to join our Regional Civils health and safety team in the Central and South East (C&SE) Delivery Unit.

The HS&E Advisor will provide risk-based assurance that our projects are compliant with all UK HSE legislation and company HS&E requirements, providing expert technical HS&E advice, guidance, and support as required by the role.

The role will involve regular travel throughout the region but mainly projects which are located on the Eastern side of the regional footprint however occasionally there may be requirement to work outside that area as and when required in the performance of designated HS&E duties.

What you'll be doing

  • Provide risk-based assurance that projects are compliant with HS&E requirements of UK regulatory framework and the BB UK Business Management System (BMS).
  • Collaboratively engage with both internal & external customers/stakeholders as well as the Supply Chain.
  • Provide projects with expert HS&E technical advice, guidance and support.
  • Support work winning teams with suitable HS&E responses for bids, proposals and PQQs.
  • Engage and develop relationships with design & engineering teams to eliminate and reduce HS&E risk through effective design considerations.
  • Embed a culture where construction health risks are treated with equal consideration as safety risks Treating Health like Safety.
  • Embed HS&S values through demonstrable visible leadership in line with Zero Harm Vision.
  • Provide expert support to incident investigations and near miss events and produce reports to document incidents accordingly.
  • Undertake regular checks on Environmental Risk Management ensuring that appropriate risks and opportunities have been identified and are being implemented accordingly.
  • Produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record planned & unplanned HS&E inspections which review project conformance against the UK HSES Regulatory Framework & UK Business Management System (BMS) requirements.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Relevant Health, Safety and Environment Qualifications H&S Diploma, NVQ or Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification).
  • To hold or be currently working toward Chartered Membership of IOSH.
  • Good understanding of CDM 2015 Roles and Responsibilities.
  • Challenge the norm by use of innovative techniques and looking for continual improvement to the way we work, while keeping pace with any industry change.
  • Ability to influence and promote a positive HS&E culture.
  • Competence in incident & accident investigation.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework & UK Business Management System.
  • Previous experience in civils and build construction projects.
  • Ability to prepare formal written reports and publications on HS&E topics.
  • Ability to undertake project planning, project management and work within budgets.
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) competence.
  • Ability to engage and communicate at all levels.

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Additional relevant skills and qualifications in any technical area.
  • Internal Auditor qualification (ISO 18001, ISO 9001 and or 14001).
  • Environmental and Sustainability Qualification.
