About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Head of Operations to join our Regional Scotland team working in Northern Scotland. This person will provide strategic operational management, strong leadership and control of a multi-disciplinary team comprising engineering and supervisory resources at all levels and facilitation of strong links with other teams within and external to the project. They will be the operations lead through the pre-construction stage/ECI- Early Contractor Involvement of the project and subsequently responsible for the project delivery.

What you'll be doing

Key Accountabilities:

  • Sets and manages targets and KPIs in line with Project / Business objectives and monitors performance, steering towards success
  • Leads / Reviews Accident / Incident Investigations. Reviews and appraises findings and leads / directs the appropriate action arising (HFACS and Four Page Reports). Implements culture for change when required
  • Ensures that sufficient resources are allocated to the Works Sections and that each has an appropriate level of ability. Establishes opportunities for mentoring to facilitate this
  • Identifies longer term strategic training to support individual development as required
  • Sets targets and KPIs in line with Project objectives and monitors performance
  • Manages the implementation of systems and processes for Right First Time approach
  • Overall ownership of Handover Documentation for each Section
  • Drives Lean initiatives to improve project efficiency
  • Manages sub-contractor performance based on KPIs
  • Chairs weekly team leader meetings to review strategic performance through the pre-construction stage and then construction stage
  • Sets and aligns targets and KPIs in line with budget forecast with the Head of Commercial
  • Oversees the preparation of a cost plan and manages cost v value
  • Manages the procurement of subcontractors and advises on commercial aspects / preferred attendances and operational risks to the scheme and mitigation options
  • Supports Estimating Team as required for work winning

Who we're looking for

Core

  • Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately. Implements improvements to systems
  • Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes with clarity; experienced at encouraging direct reports to do the same and managing a team to ensure tasks are carried out effectively and key messages cascaded
  • Strong work ethic with flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights
  • Holds a CSCS Card. Must be SMSTS qualified
  • Provision of assistance and expert knowledge to reinforce the objectives of the work winning teams
  • NEC experience
  • Chartered Engineer background either from ICE,CIOB, CIBSE or equivalent
  • Delivery of contracts in the value of 300m

Engineering Control

  • Experienced in resource allocation and up skilling
  • Knowledge and experience of links between design teams and operational delivery
  • Identifies and champions lessons learned to ensure continual improvement in the business

Quality

  • Understands, implements and champions the Organisational Business Management Systems and processes involved
  • Clear understanding of the requirements for handover and self-certification of the works, including management experience of the same

Productivity

  • Understands sub-contractor KPIs and has wide ranging experience of using them to manage performance
  • Experience in the management of a wide range of construction operations, including phasing and contingency planning, together with testing and handover

Commercial

  • Used to setting targets in line with budget with agreement of Commercial Manager
  • Able to produce and manage a realistic financial forecast and track progress against programme
