The Maintenance Manager is to provide technical leadership and direction to enable the repair and maintenance of the equipment owned by Balfour Beatty. This is to ensure the availability of serviceable equipment to meet the operational plan.

What you'll be doing

As a Maintenance Manager you will have the following accountabilities:

Engineering Compliance

  • Responsible for ensuring all maintenance activities and repairs are compliant to the relevant technical publications, policies, and standards.
  • Monitoring of equipment health to allow active intervention to eliminate in-service failures.
  • Monitoring of Logbooks and quality Inspections
  • To embrace and champion Reliability initiatives to improve operational delivery the customers key measure.
  • Conducting technical investigations and drafting of reports for safety critical or service affecting faults, to identify root cause and strategies to eradicate.
  • Working with the Reliability Engineer to review failure data and propose strategies to prevent re-occurrence, sharing lessons learned within Balfour Beatty Rail
  • Working with the Maintenance Trainer and Assessor to ensure that staff competency levels are sufficient to support the roster and that engineering standards are maintained at the expected standard.
  • Reviewing completed maintenance documentation to ensure it meets the mandated standard and provides clear traceability for the actions carried out.

Resource Management

  • Rostering of maintenance personnel.
  • Ensuring that the machines has sufficient levels of technical equipment to deliver safe, efficient and compliant maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification.
  • Ensure that consumables held on-site are of sufficient quantities to sustain the operational plan and maintenance activities.

People Management & Leadership

  • To develop relationships based on mutual respect and understanding, employing management techniques to energise and get the best out of your staff.
  • To act as the first point of contact to your staff regarding HR matters, ensuring that the policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • To develop your subordinates to enhance their capabilities and identifying those with the potential to be future technical leaders.
  • To take time to technically Mentor and Coach your staff to reinforce and broaden their experience.
  • Actively involved in the recruitment and selection of maintenance personnel.
  • The ability to engage and work coherently with our customers and suppliers to mutually understand any requirements or requests; and to deal with them expediently and professionally.

Health & Safety

  • Proactively engaging with your Staff to champion Making Safety Personal and the Zero Harm Journey Plan
  • Conduct Safety Briefs and Toolbox talks, challenge unsafe behaviours and encourage your team to champion safety improvements and report concerns via the Close Call system.
  • Coordinating and reporting of Depot infrastructure faults and scheduled maintenance events (NR & BBR)
  • Responsible for nominating the following Depot safety roles and ensuring their duties are being executed.
  • Depot First Aider (if appropriate).
  • Depot Fire Warden (if appropriate).
  • Safety Coach.

Asset Management & Planning

  • Ensuring seasonal assets are available to meet the operation plan and that utilisation levels are considered to maximise component health.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the maintenance plan is being adhered to.
  • Formulation of the out-of-season maintenance plan with the responsibility for tracking the progress, whilst coordinating and scheduling any required 3rd party activities

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Experience within the Rail Industry
  • Experience in a management/leadership role within a fast paced business
  • Experience of report/investigation writing
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an Engineering Discipline
