About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Sustainability Advisor to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business working in the South West of England.

The E&S Advisor will support with 2 projects. The YYM Overhead Line Refurbishment Scheme where Balfour Beatty are working on behalf of National Grid. This project spans from Melksham to Bramley. The other project is the North Wessex Downs Visual Impact Provision Scheme based in Devizes, also working on behalf of National Grid, replacing the overhead lines into an underground system as the site is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The E&S Advisor will Provide support and advice to operational teams on all aspects of environmental management, planning condition compliance, developing environmental documentation, meeting legal and company standards and helping deliver a culture of continual improvement.

The successful candidate will need to understand and work with Clients and Regulators to ensure their environmental requirements are complied with and support on site mitigation, sustainability of works and engagement with local stakeholders and members of the public.

What you'll be doing

  • Provide advice and support to operational teams on environmental matters and compliance with planning conditions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local stakeholders.
  • Ensure on site compliance with environmental legislation and coach teams in applying controls and mitigations.
  • Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management and sustainability.
  • Assist in delivering documents to form part of planning condition discharges and monitoring of key conditions throughout
  • Produce and update environmental management plans and environmental risk assessments.
  • Provide on-site advice to operations and design teams on environmental management, compliance and project specific mitigation measures including pollution control and ecological and archaeological protection.
  • Implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain in line with the project commitments.
  • Be aware of any changes to standards and legislation and where applicable, recommend changes to systems and processes.
  • Deliver environmental training, toolbox talks and undertake onsite coaching.
  • Assist in the development and production of key performance indicators and management reports.

Who we're looking for

  • Strong knowledge of environment management and sustainable development.
  • Educated to degree level in an environmental discipline.
  • Practical experience and knowledge of environmental legislation, ecology and archaeology mitigation, environmental licences, consent applications and regulators.
  • Understanding of ecological and archaeological matters and environmental law.
  • Full UK driver's licence and flexibility to travel.
  • Understanding of the utilities/construction/engineering operating environment.
  • Literate in MS Office - Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

  • Internal environmental auditor qualification
  • Knowledge of Town and Country Planning Act
  • Master's degree in relevant field
  • NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the Construction Industry
  • IEMA Membership
